Gerald DeJean

Gerald R. DeJean joined the ATHENA Research Group in August of 2001 after receiving the B.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Michigan State University in December of 2000. While a member of the ATHENA Group, he conducted research and worked on many projects that involved the 3D system-on-package (SOP) integration of embedded functions that focuses largely on modern commercial RF systems such as cellular phones for PCS applications, Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz ISM applications, RFID's, WLAN (802.11a,b,g), LMDS, and millimeter-wave applications at 60 GHz. Based on this work, Gerald authored and co-authored over 40 papers in refereed Journals and Conference Proceedings. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in May 2005 and January of 2007, respectively.

Currently, Gerald works at Microsoft Research as a researcher in the Hardware Devices Group. While there, he spends his research efforts on complex antenna design and system-level integration for mobile and gaming devices, wireless routers, and the transmission of signals over "white spaces". In addition, he is heavily involved in the study of secure encryption of RFIDs. In November 2008, Gerald was appointed to the position of adjunct assistant professor. In this role, he serves on proposal and dissertation committees and currently advises the research direction of one student, Trang T. Thai. With Trang as his advisee, Gerald coordinates research efforts in the characterization of carbon nanotubes for gas sensing and the design of RF transducers for pressure sensing.
